News! Finally! Progress!
Today our friend, Mike, came and set the entire cabin up for power. Sockets, breaker panel, everything. (He even set up the wiring for us to have a porch light! This is so exciting!) He’s coming back on Wednesday to help Kyle construct the walls for a bathroom/laundry room and to run underground power cables from the old power pole to the cabin.
That’s right, underground power lines. You may be asking yourselves why we didn’t just call the power company and ask them to put a new pole beside the cabin. Wouldn’t that be easier? Of course it would. But when we contacted the power company they offered us the following deal: they would charge us $300 to put a new pole by the cabin and then charge us prorated monthly fees for the old house plus the cabin (meaning that we would be forced to pay the minimum charge requirement for BOTH homes regardless of how much power we actually used). We can’t completely unplug the old house yet because we are still using the bathroom for the time being. So we basically decided that we will no longer negotiate with power companies. We’re doing this our way, the backwoods, tiny cabin way. Live free or die? or something like that.
